RANT!!!! (but only a little one)

I will start by saying I am not one for nerd rage; change happens and we roll with it; adapt and change, Gribble,gribble, consume for the hive..... ahem excuse me, But this will be a rant of some minor rage.

Ok onwards, you may have not seen it yet but there some pics going around from the new WD where one of the Morons calling himself a games designer is telling us about the exciting new changes to 40k;

To summarize the madness;
1. Bound and unbound armies; use the force org chart and get bonuses, or simply ignore it and take what you want! Also noted a new Allies Matrix (Chaos and marines are probably Battle brothers now)
(i mean seriously all i wanted to see was someone reigning in the force org madness we have now by limiting options, not throw the restrictions away!)

2. Maelstrom of war missions; ok i like the sound of this one, 32 possible objectives (sold as a deck, Clever money men) which can resolve during the game, should prevent static games or last minute objective grabs.
(however, did the mission need more complexity?)

3. New dedicated Psychic phase; WooHoo 40k now has a magic phase, with power dice, dispel dice and new summon deamon psychic table woot
(are none or the games designers aware of how messed up 2nd ed psychic phase was? or how broken the current Warhammer magic phase can be? Watch for a new Storm of Psykers expansion coming to a garbage bin near you!)

So to summarize, what i was hoping for was a more sensible (if not streamlined) version of 6th, but im getting offered a higher level of insanity!!!!

Quite frankly im glad i play mostly 30k now where most of this will have no effect

  2. I was going to add to this but Tom seems to have covered the crap storm quite well.

    Totally agree on all points, especially that we are safer playing 30k, oh Alan Bligh, our bearded saviour and protecter, allow us to remain safe 10,000 years prior to this madness where WMDs in 1750pt games are expected and not forced upon us :p

    Cheers

  3. would it be a fools errand to have a stab at knocking together a '5.5th' edition for our playgroup?

  4. I for once (and yoi may want to be sitting down for this one) quite like the idea of the unbound/battle bonkers division of the armies as I'm begining to adopt a 'play with the rules I like' approach to 40k which I believe is the intention of the designers. This was going to be my article yesterday (all that old rosie and dungeon delving keft me a little worn out) but I noticed that when we play 40k we never use precision shots or precision strike, we actively avoid using units whoes rules are overly complex or stupid and have never once traked wqrp charge points using counters as recommended. So I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the rules and giving it a try before I worry about how nuts some parts are. The psychic phase will actually solve a lot of the problems they introduced in 6th with the array of powers they added (even if it is another subgame within a game). I have been thinking for sime time that I should start to put together a set of rulea but with GW's high release schedule it just feels easier to just cherry pick the rules I want.

    1. I think having a psychic phase does solve a few of the problems that currently surround psykers, but making it like the fantasy magic phase (when thats one of the few areas i ahve a problem with the fantasy ruleset) doesnt seem like the right move.
      And i do kind of agree with you in a way, but it occures to me that, at some point, there has to be a tipping point. How many of the rules am i happy to discard from a rulebook before i start to wonder if its worth laying down any cash for said rulebook in the first place?

    2. another problem i have with the 'unbound' is yeah, i can off the top of my head think of a good number of 'wouldnt it be cool if...' kind of lists, but they generally involve getting a lot more of a particular elite/fast attack/heavy support unit than id ever use normally, and probably only use it once or twice before the gimmick wears off as its either shit or overpowered.

      sorry to be a debbie downer, maybe it wont be quite as bad as i think it looks, but to paraphrase myself from a different blog comment, it feels like theyre adding more layers of rules while reducing the structure of the game. And with some of the action-figure-esque minis we've had of late, at what point does it stop being a 'tactical' wargame and become GI Joes with some dice rolls?

  5. ugh, and then i have a flash of inspiration and wonder if karandras, 36 striking scorpions with exarchs and 2 wraithknights modelled up to look a bit like scorpion knights would be entertaining to play with beyond just looking cool.

    1. And thus the corruption has begun! I think the real problem is that GW needs to get rid of the force org chart to ship more models but can't financially commit to a comolete revamp of the rules so have decided to do it by increments. I think it will make running tournaments a breeze, as you just tell people which pages/rules to ignore and you are golden ;-)

    1. I have no problem with people taking those armies as I won't be playing against them. I have a very simple rule of only playing against lists which will produce a fun game and am quite happy to tell people I don't want to play against their list as it would be a waste of time. I thiml the problem is that we don't know the missions look like and. it is these type of people and their 'I'll do it because I can' attitude towards the game that causes the problem. If people focused on producing a fun game (for both players!) rather than winning I think you'll be fine.

    2. They forgot the 'coteaz & 116 squads of 3 inquisitorial henchmen' list.

    3. Buy sir, you have not taken into account my new chess 'death' clock rule. You only have 1 hour of play time to complete 7 turns!

    4. Did you boys ever see that rediculous argument that said you could take coteaz twice because he was in 2 different codex....

    5. i didnt, that is quite a stretch. 'i have every printed chaos codex, thus i shall field abaddon from each one in one army. IT DOESNT SAY THE PREVIOUS BOOKS ARE OBSOLETE DOES IT!!?'

  7. Ah, another noce reasuring artical that says pretty much the same as yourself Dave:

  8. 64 squads of 10 grots with a runtherder plus a big mek with a Justin forcefield.

    Now that would be cool to look at.

    Horrible to play against(also would take an hour per game phase)
